Early 19th Century Hand Painted Swedish Marriage Chest

19th century
Description

Early 19th century hand painted swedish marriage chest circa 1807.

During our travels around scandinavia we come across numerous folk art and rustic coffers of this era, but this is up there with one of the best quality.

Dome topped with an overall base blue/grey colour scheme, black metal strap work and carrying handles.  beautifully hand painted to the front with florals and swags, date and first owners names.   substantial lid opens to reveal and further painted interior with date and initials inside a hand painted wreath and the standard fitted candle box.  all unusually raised on the original small bun feet.  remarkably supplied with 2 working keys for the original working lock.

Expected surface marks, natural fading and wear to paint work.  minor restoration to metal work to keep secure.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Scandinavian folk art marriage chest is constructed from pine, finished in a blue-grey paint, and fitted with black wrought iron straps and side carrying handles. The domed lid sits above a heavily decorated front, which includes hand-painted floral swags, scrolling motifs, and the inscribed name Johanes Swens Son alongside the date Anno 1807 in white and red lettering. The box stands upon small turned bun feet and displays expected surface marks, natural fading, and wear to the painted surfaces alongside minor restoration to the metalwork. Measuring 66 cm high, 118.1 cm wide, and 54.6 cm deep, this substantial storage piece provides an eye-catching focal point for a bedroom, hallway, or living room. It functions effectively as a decorative coffee table or a blanket box at the foot of a bed while offering practical interior storage space.

FAQs

A Swedish marriage chest, or dowry trunk, was traditionally crafted and hand-painted as a wedding gift in 18th and 19th-century Scandinavia to store household linens, pewter, and personal textiles.

These chests were constructed primarily from local softwoods such as pine or fir, reinforced with hand-forged wrought iron hardware, and decorated with mineral-pigment paints.

Authentic pieces feature traditional folk painting techniques, hand-forged iron straps and locks, dovetail joinery, and explicit inscriptions including owner initials or marriage dates.

A painted marriage chest functions as a statement piece at the foot of a bed, serves as a central coffee table in a living area, or provides structural storage in an entrance hall.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding abrasive chemicals or water, and keeping the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
