FAQs

Dinner bells gained popularity during the Victorian era as a functional accessory in large households to summon servants from dining rooms and parlours, often featuring elaborate decorative motifs.

These pieces were typically crafted using a base metal such as brass, copper, or white metal, finished with a silver plating layer applied via electroplating, and frequently paired with wooden or metal strikers.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the weight, the quality of the silver plating, manufacturing marks or maker stamps, and signs of age-appropriate oxidisation and wear on the metal.

Such decorative objects work well as accent pieces on sideboards, mantelpieces, or open shelving, adding a touch of historical metallic texture to contemporary spaces.

Silver plated items should be cleaned gently using a non-abrasive microfibre cloth and specialized silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the thin metallic coating.
