Description

A Late George III Mahogany, Purple Heart and Boxwood-Strung Secretaire Bookcase. Early 19th century, with the upper section having astragal-glazed doors enclosing three adjustable shelves. The deep fall-front secretaire drawer features a green-baize interior, eight pigeonholes and eight small mahogany drawers all around a central cupboard door, below which there are three long drawers all with later handles. Finished on bracket feet.

Overall condition is very good with age-related wear & tear. We have noted a small piece of veneer missing toward the back left of the bookcase section, but this does not detract from the charm of this wonderful piece of Georgian cabinetry.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The George III style, spanning the late 18th to early 19th century, is characterised by classical proportions, refined craftsmanship, and the sophisticated use of imported timbers such as mahogany, complemented by intricate inlay and stringing.

These pieces typically feature solid timber frames with figured mahogany veneers, accented by contrasting woods like boxwood and purpleheart. Construction relies on traditional hand-cut dovetails, mortise and tenon joints, and pegged framing.

Authenticity is determined by examining timber ageing, hand-cut dovetailing in the drawer construction, original glass panes with imperfections, period-correct brass hardware, and the presence of hand-applied secondary woods inside the carcass.

Such substantial pieces serve as a striking focal point in studies or living rooms, contrasting effectively against neutral walls while providing functional display space and a concealed workspace.

Maintain antique timber by avoiding direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations, applying a quality microcrystalline wax periodically, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth.
