This nineteenth-century table lamp is in the Chinoiserie style, constructed from wood with a black Japanned finish, hand-painted gilt decoration, parcel gilding, and a pleated burgundy fabric shade. The lamp has a turned column with carved and moulded details, rising from a circular base. The raised gilt ornamentation shows minor imperfections. It stands 48 cm high, 17.5 cm wide, and 17.5 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece sits on a sideboard top or side table to provide accent lighting in a living room, hallway, or study. The electrical wiring is updated, making it ready for immediate use within an English country house interior scheme.

FAQs

Chinoiserie lighting originated in Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as craftspeople imitated East Asian lacquerwork and decorative motifs to satisfy European demand for orientalist design.

Traditional Chinoiserie lamps feature bases crafted from turned wood or metal, finished with layers of black lacquer or japanned enamel, detailed with gilt paint, and paired with silk or pleated fabric shades.

Authentic pieces show hand-painted gilt decoration with slight variations, natural surface craquelure within the lacquer ground, and evidence of historical re-wiring modernisations.

Position the lamp on a dark wood sideboard or neutral console table to balance contemporary minimalist furnishings with subtle historical pattern and warm ambient light.

Dust the lacquered base gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without liquid polish or harsh solvents, and clean the pleated shade with a soft-bristled brush.
