During the Victorian era, silver christening mugs were traditionally given as gifts to newborns to mark their baptism and to wish them a prosperous future, often serving as a family heirloom passed down through generations.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid sterling silver, adhering to the strict fineness standards of the British Assay Offices, and were often shaped using a combination of spinning or hammering techniques followed by hand-engraving.

Authentification relies heavily on identifying official British hallmarks stamped into the metal, which typically include the makers mark, the standard mark for sterling silver, the assay office city mark, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of production.

Antique silver objects add a layer of historical contrast and reflective metallic sheen to modern spaces, and can be displayed effectively on open shelving, sideboards, or within glass cabinets as curated decorative accents.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialized, non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfiber cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip away desirable patina and vintage detail.
