A sugar caster, also known as a sugar shaker or sifter, is a perforated vessel traditionally used for sprinkling powdered or caster sugar onto food items such as desserts and pastries during the Victorian era.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as silversmithing, repousse work, chasing, and piercing for the decorative lids.

Authentic pieces are identified by examining the hallmarks stamped on the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark for sterling silver, a date letter corresponding to the assay office, and the sovereigns head.

This piece can be displayed on a dining table centrepiece, sideboard, or within a glass-fronted cabinet to add a touch of historical craftsmanship and metallic sheen to contemporary spaces.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialist non-abrasive silver cloth and mild soapy water, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip away desirable patina and damage the metal.
