Ormolu

(from French 'or moulu', signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th-century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to an object of bronze. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold-coloured veneer known as 'gilt bronze'.

The manufacture of true ormolu employs a process known as mercury-gilding or fire-gilding, in which a solution of nitrate of mercury is applied to a piece of copper, brass, or bronze, followed by the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury. The item was then exposed to extreme heat until the mercury burned off and the gold remained, adhered to the metal object.

No true ormolu was produced in France after around 1830 because legislation had outlawed the use of mercury. Therefore, other techniques were used instead but nothing surpasses the original mercury-firing ormolu method for sheer beauty and richness of colour. Electroplating is the most common modern technique. Ormolu techniques are essentially the same as those used on silver, to produce silver-gilt (also known as vermeil).

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Hand chasing across the cast backplates: detailed metalwork from around 1900.
Soft wear to the gilded high points: decades of careful domestic handling.
Darker oxidisation settled into the recesses of the foliage: natural aging of gilt bronze.
Bored candle sockets fitted with modern bulb holders: early lighting adapted for electricity.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This is a pair of antique French Louis Revival three-branch wall lights made around 1900. Crafted in gold-coloured ormolu and gilded brass, the ornate pieces display elaborate acanthus leaves, Rococo scrolls, trellis patterns, and candle-style drip sleeves with upright candle-shaped bulbs. The elaborate backplates support three branching arms fitted with circular drip trays, creating a classical French chateau aesthetic. Each light measures 42 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 34 cm deep. Position these wall lights above a sideboard, fireplace mantel, or console table in a dining room, hallway, or drawing room to provide layered illumination and decorative character. The bright gold finish reflects interior lighting, bringing traditional warmth and visual interest to vertical wall spaces.

Louis Revival lighting from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries draws design cues from eighteenth-century French Rococo and Neoclassical styles, featuring elaborate scrollwork, acanthus foliage, and gilded metal surfaces.

Authentic pieces were typically cast in bronze or brass prior to being gilded using mercury gilding or electroplating techniques to create a durable golden finish.

Genuine period wall lights exhibit heavy cast metal bodies, hand-chased surface detailing, visible casting marks on the reverse, and subtle oxidisation within the recessed areas.

Placing a pair of gilded sconces on either side of a mirror or above a console table introduces architectural texture and contrast within contemporary interiors.

Dust regularly using a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoiding chemical cleaners, water, or metal polish that can strip away original gilding and patina.
