Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early George V novelty silver bell inkwell, dating from the Edwardian period in 1912, is made of polished silver with a reflective metallic grey colour. The piece takes a bell form, incorporating a hinged lid with an Art Deco style thumb grip, a triangular top loop handle, a stepped circular base with raised mouldings, and a removable glass inkwell liner inside. The silver surface shows reflections of the surrounding room and subtle softening to the hallmarks, while maintaining an undamaged body without dents or splits. Measuring 6 cm high by 6 cm wide and 6 cm deep, this compact desk accessory is designed for practical use on an office desk or within a gentleman's library. It brings a functional and decorative touch to a traditional study workspace, suitable for holding ink alongside everyday stationery items.

FAQs

Popularised during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, novelty silver inkwells were desk accessories fashioned into whimsical shapes, such as bells, animals, or helmets. These items combined functional writing utility with decorative craftsmanship for study desks and writing tables.

These objects were commonly crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, often housing a removable glass liner inside to contain liquid ink. The exterior features hinged covers, weighted bases, and hand-finished or cast decorative details.

Authentic silver pieces feature official assay hallmarks stamped into the metal, indicating the silver purity, makers mark, location, and year of manufacture. Examining the hinge mechanism, wear on the base, and original glass liner inserts also helps verify age.

Place the piece on an executive office desk, atop a stack of leather-bound books on a bookshelf, or styled alongside brass desk instruments in a study. Its metallic finish complements dark wood surfaces and tailored workspace settings.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and polish gently using a specialised silver polishing cream to remove tarnish. Ensure any glass liner is kept clean and free from dried ink residue using mild soapy water.
