This late Victorian silverplated toast rack dates from approximately 1890 and originates from Sheffield, manufactured by George Waterhouse and Company. The piece presents a rectangular form with six divisions created by seven arched wire dividers, supported by four small ball feet and topped with a decorative central loop handle. Constructed from a silverplated base metal with a bright silver finish, the design incorporates pierced scrollwork ends and a wire frame structure. Hallmarks and maker's marks appear on the metal surface, showing appropriate signs of age and handling. Practical dimensions measure 15 cm high, 17.5 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. The toast rack suits display and functional use on a sideboard top, breakfast table, or kitchen counter within an English Country House setting, holding toast or letters in daily service.

Introduced in the late 18th century and popularized throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras, toast racks were designed to allow air to circulate around freshly toasted bread, preventing condensation from making the slices soggy during breakfast service.

Toast racks were commonly crafted from sterling silver, electroplated nickel silver (EPNS), or silverplate over a base metal alloy, constructed using shaped wire bars soldered onto a rectangular or oval frame.

Authentic silverplated items typically feature stamped makers marks or initials such as EPNS (Electroplated Nickel Silver) or EPBM (Electroplated Britannia Metal) on the underside of the base, along with signs of light wear or soft patina consistent with age.

Beyond traditional breakfast table settings, an antique toast rack can be repurposed as a desktop organiser for letters, postcards, and stationery, or displayed on a sideboard as a decorative metalwork accent.

Clean silverplated items gently using a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish or mild soapy water, avoiding abrasive pads or harsh chemicals that can strip the micro-thin layer of electroplated silver.
