A six plank coffer is one of the earliest and simplest forms of domestic storage furniture in England, constructed from six individual boards joined together with dovetails, tongue-and-groove, or simple pegging dating back to the medieval and post-medieval periods.

These pieces are traditionally crafted from solid English oak, often joined using pegged mortise and tenon joints or edge-to-edge nailing, secured with hand-wrought iron hinges, strapwork, and central lock plates.

Authentic items display period-appropriate tool marks such as adze marks and pit-sawing, hand-forged iron hardware, shrinkage cracks consistent with age, and a rich, oxidised patina developed over centuries of use.

This piece can be styled effectively as a functional focal point at the foot of a bed or beneath a window, pairing its rich wood grain and historic texture with contemporary textiles and minimalist surroundings to create visual contrast.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room humidity and temperature away from direct heat sources to prevent timber splitting, applying natural beeswax occasionally to nourish the grain, and avoiding synthetic polishes.
