Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century French Neoclassical window seat brings French Chateau elegance to a home. The piece consists of a painted wooden frame in cream and gold with a calico button-tufted upholstered cushion on top, awaiting a final choice of fabric. Notable details visible include carved drapery swags, a central medallion relief, and fluted pilasters along the decorative front panels, finished with visible signs of wear and aged surface texture on both the upholstery edges and the painted woodwork. Small dark castors support the curved base at floor level. Measuring 62 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 56 cm deep, this bench offers practical storage space inside the structured base. In contemporary interiors, this versatile seating option works well positioned beneath a large window, placed in a bay window, or stationed at the foot of a bed in a bedroom. The neutral cream and gold colour palette integrates easily with traditional bedroom schemes or classical living spaces while providing an accessible storage solution for household items.

FAQs

Inspired by classical antiquity, 19th-century French Neoclassical window seats feature symmetrical proportions, carved relief details such as drapery swags and central medallions, and painted or gilded wood finishes designed to fit into recessed window alcoves or formal reception rooms.

These benches were constructed from carved hardwoods, finished with painted gesso or gold leaf gilding, and topped with deep button-tufted upholstery stuffed with natural horsehair or wool over traditional webbed frames.

Authentic period pieces show correct joinery such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, natural wear to painted or gilded gesso layers revealing underlying wood or red bole, and signs of hand-carved detailing rather than modern cast mouldings.

A French window seat can be positioned at the foot of a bed, within a bay window alcove, or along an entrance hallway to add architectural structure and historical contrast to a contemporary interior scheme.

Keep painted and gilded furniture away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent flaking gesso or wood movement, dusting gently with a soft dry brush rather than liquid cleaning agents.
