Description

This is a small Georgian, mouth-blown, plain bowl, Bristol blue coloured glass cream jug dating from the turn of the 18th/19th centuries, c1800.

The jug is in excellent condition for its age. This means of course that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 200 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the base.

The jug has a baluster-shaped bowl measuring 4.8 cm (1.9 inches) in diameter at the pouring rim. The bowl is plain. The jug is 8 cm (3.2 inches) across at its widest point (pouring spout to outside of the handle) and is 8.5 cm (3.4 inches) in height. The bowl sits on a conical foot which measures 4.3 cm (1.7 inches) in diameter. The handle was first applied to the top of the bowl and then finished off at the bottom of the bowl with a curlicue. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other obvious evidence of restoration. There is a collector's numbered sticker to the base and one for the Cook Collection.

A pretty, period jug weighing in at 120 g. (~ 4 oz.).

Provenance: Simon Cook Collection

Bristol blue glass is a distinct deep cobalt glass traditionally manufactured in the English city of Bristol during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, notably during the Georgian period.

Georgian glassware was hand-blown using lead or potash glass mixtures, often coloured with cobalt oxide to achieve its signature deep blue hue, and finished with applied handles and polished pontil marks.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit uneven thickness, tiny air bubbles trapped within the glass matrix, a rough or polished pontil scar on the base, and characteristic deep cobalt coloration.

These pieces can be displayed singly on open shelving, used as small single-stem vases on a mantelpiece, or grouped with other coloured glassware to catch natural light.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and harsh scrubbing brushes to protect the historic surface.
