The Chester assay office operated in England for centuries before closing in 1962, making pieces bearing its three sheaves of wheat and sword hallmark highly sought after by collectors for their distinct regional heritage.

Antique flatware was typically manufactured from sterling silver, adhering to the 925 standard, often hand-forged or cast, and finished with delicate hand-engraving or monogramming by skilled silversmiths.

Authentic pieces feature crisp stamped hallmarks including a makers mark, a standard silver purity mark such as the lion passant, a date letter indicating the year of assay, and a town mark.

These small items are frequently displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, styled on silver display trays, or incorporated into curated tablescapes to add historical depth and metallic contrast.

Antique silver should be gently cleaned using a specialist non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip desirable patination and damage historic hallmarks.
