Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is a composite material made by fusing a layer of silver to a base of copper, a technique widely used between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries before the invention of electroplating.

These items were crafted by fusing sterling silver to a copper ingot, often featuring applied silver wire borders, hand-soldered handles, and occasionally copper bleed-through where the underlying metal shows beneath the silver.

Authenticity is identified by the telltale copper lines visible along edges or wear points where the thin silver layer has worn away, the lack of modern electroplate hallmarks, and the use of copper pins or dovetail seams.

These historical pieces can be displayed on a sideboard or dining table as focal points, contrasting cleanly against contemporary minimalist surfaces to add texture and historical depth.

Clean gently with a specialist non-abrasive silver cream and a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding excessive polishing that can wear away the thin silver layer and expose the underlying copper.
