Description

This is a Georgian, English, cut and polished facet cut stem wine glass dating from the second half of the 18th century, c1770, and of probable Jacobite significance.

The glass is in excellent condition. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a rounded bucket-shaped bowl measuring 5.8 cm (2.3 inches) in diameter at the everted rim. The bowl is cut with two band of olives above a cut base, and sits on a hexagonally facet cut stem with a medial knop. The stem leads to a cut foot which measures 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter and is in the form of a six-sided rose. The belief is that these glasses were used by Jacobite supporters who indicated their allegiance this way; the foot being seen by other as they tipped their glass and drank from it. The glass is 15.3 cm (6.1 inches) in height. There are the normal very tiny flea-bite chips out of the cut edges of the foot which can be seen in the relevant image, but these are no more than reasonable wear and tear for the form. There are no other chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

English lead glass weighing in at 165 g. (~ 6 oz.).

Provenance: The Tanyards Collection, East Sussex.

Georgian Jacobite wine glasses are historically significant drinking vessels associated with secret societies supporting the exiled Stuart claimants to the British throne, often featuring subtle political iconography or specific engraving styles.

These glasses are traditionally crafted from heavy lead crystal or flint glass, which provided the high refractive index necessary for deep cutting and polishing.

Authenticity is determined by examining the metal of the glass for tiny air bubbles and striations, checking the wear on the foot rim, and analysing the specific cutting techniques and engraving styles characteristic of the period.

An antique wine glass can be displayed within a glazed cabinet or on a dedicated bar cart as a focal point, pairing historical craftsmanship with contemporary minimalist surroundings.

Antique crystal should always be washed by hand in warm water using a mild detergent, never placed in a dishwasher, and dried carefully with a lint-free linen cloth to protect the surface.
