Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This English breakfront library bookcase dates from 1880, executed in the Georgian style from oak with an off-white painted finish. The large tripartite piece stands 254 cm high, 207 cm wide, and 52 cm deep, offering substantial storage capacity for any room. The upper section contains open shelving fitted with adjustable shelf ratchets on the upright supports, arranged behind three vertical bays. Crowning the top is a carved openwork fretwork swan neck pediment with intricate scroll motifs, balanced by stepped cornices above each section. Beneath the open upper shelves, the base section comprises three flush-mounted panelled cupboard doors with simple moulded borders, concealing internal storage space. The entire architectural form follows a breakfront profile, where the central bay projects forward from the flanking sections, creating depth and shadow across the façade. The structure rests upon short bracket feet that elevate the lower moulding slightly above the floor. Suitable for a drawing room, study or large hallway, this tall bookcase holds a collection of books or decorative objects while adding traditional English country house character to the interior.

FAQs

A breakfront library bookcase features a central section that projects forward beyond the flanking side wings. Popularised in 18th-century Britain, these large-scale storage pieces were designed to house extensive book collections in grand country estates and townhouses.

Traditional English breakfront bookcases were predominantly crafted from solid woods such as mahogany, oak, walnut, or pine. Construction often featured hand-dovetailed drawers, adjustable shelf ratchets, and panelled cupboard doors with brass ironmongery.

Authentic period pieces typically show signs of hand-planed timbers, hand-cut dovetail joints, and age-related wear to original finishes. Examine the back panels and shelf support mechanisms for historical construction techniques rather than modern machine fittings.

Balance the substantial visual weight of the piece by displaying books alongside curated ceramics, framed artwork, and decorative objects. Using neutral painted finishes allows the bookcase to integrate seamlessly into modern open-plan living areas or home offices.

Clean painted timber surfaces gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays or abrasive cleaners. Maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber shrinkage, swelling, or paint flaking.
