During the Victorian era, the expansion of postal services led to a surge in correspondence, prompting the creation of decorative desk accessories like letter openers crafted from silver, bone, and semi-precious stones.

Traditional letter openers frequently combined precious metals such as sterling silver for the mounts and ferrules, with natural organic blades like bone or ivory, and handles fashioned from hardstones like agate.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining hallmarks stamped on the silver components, which indicate the assay office, makers mark, and year of manufacture, alongside genuine wear patterns on the organic blade.

An antique letter opener can be displayed resting on a stack of art books on a coffee table, placed atop a modern executive desk, or showcased inside a glass-topped display cabinet.

Preservation involves storing pieces away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, gently cleaning the silver with a soft cloth while avoiding harsh chemical dips that could damage organic blades or stone inlays.
