Decanter labels, also known as bottle tickets, emerged in the mid-18th century to identify the contents of decanters when decanted wine and spirits were served at the dining table. By the Victorian era, designs became highly ornate, often featuring pierced work, vine motifs, and elaborate cast borders.

Traditional decanter labels were primarily crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as casting, piercing, and hand-engraving. They were fitted with a matching silver chain to suspend them around the neck of a decanter or bottle.

Authentic pieces are identified by clear British hallmarks stamped on the reverse or front, which typically include the makers mark, the lion passant for sterling silver, the town mark, and a date letter indicating the exact year of assay.

These small pieces of silverwork can be displayed on vintage decanters upon a bar cart, showcased inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or collected and mounted in a traditional shadow box as miniature works of art.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialist non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to maintain the original patina and hallmark definition, avoiding harsh dips that can strip historical oxidisation.
