A Victorian oil lamp is a lighting device from the 19th century that burns kerosene, paraffin, or other plant-based oils using a wick drawn through a metal burner, frequently featuring decorative glass fonts and metal bases.

These lamps typically combined glass reservoirs, known as fonts, with brass, bronze, or spelter metal columns and bases, topped with blown or etched glass shades and glass chimneys.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate burner mechanisms with maker marks, hand-blown or hand-etched glass components with minor surface imperfections, and traditional assembly methods such as threaded metal collars.

An antique oil lamp functions well as a focal decorative object on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or side table, adding historical texture and rich colour to traditional or eclectic schemes.

Glass components should be cleaned gently using mild soapy water and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh abrasives, while brass parts should be dusted carefully without removing the desirable natural oxidisation.
