The X-frame design, also known as the curule or folding chair form, dates back to antiquity, experiencing revivals during the Renaissance, the Regency period, and the Victorian era when it was favored for formal drawing rooms.

These stools were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, featuring hand-carved details and upholstered tops finished with traditional horsehair stuffing and brass tacking.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned stretcher components, natural timber ageing, and traditional upholstery methods rather than modern staples or synthetic adhesives.

This versatile seating piece can be placed at the foot of a bed, used as an occasional seat in a living room, or positioned beneath a console table to add textural contrast and historical character.

Maintain the timber by applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the grain, keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and clean upholstered velvet surfaces with a soft brush.
