This antique Japanese Imari plate dates from the Victorian period and belongs to the Japanese Imari decorative style. The piece consists of porcelain decorated with hand-painted enamel and gold leaf finish. The design features a palette of rust red, cobalt blue, white, black, and gold, displaying chrysanthemum motifs, floral scrollwork, gilt detailing, and asymmetrical paneling across the circular surface. Additional details visible include a smooth glazed surface, intricate black painted leaves, and complex geometric patterns within the floral segments. The plate measures 3 cm high, 21.5 cm wide, and 21.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this decorative plate suits placement on a sideboard top to add colour and traditional pattern to a room. It functions well as a display piece within an English Country House interior scheme, sitting on a cabinet surface, within a cabinet, or mounted on a wall. The item remains in perfect original condition without chips, cracks, or repairs.

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and was exported to Europe starting in the seventeenth century via the port of Imari. These ceramics gained international prestige for their distinctive colour palette, blending underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron-red enamels and gilt highlights.

Traditional Imari ware was crafted from local kaolin clay fired at high temperatures. The production process involved painterly underglaze cobalt application, high-temperature firing, followed by meticulous hand-painting of enamels and gold leaf before a lower-temperature enamel firing.

Authentic pieces generally display signs of hand-painted variations, subtle spur marks on the base from kiln support, and wear to the surface gilding. The glaze often exhibits a slight bluish-white tint rather than a bright, stark white modern finish.

Decorative plates can be styled on acrylic or timber display stands atop sideboards and consoles, or arranged in symmetrical wall groupings. Their rich colour palette complements both dark wooden furniture and contemporary neutral backdrops.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to avoid lifting delicate gilding or enamels. Avoid abrasive cleaners, chemical detergents, or immersing the piece in water, as moisture can compromise fine glaze fractures or surface decoration.
