FAQs

Scumble painting is a decorative technique involving the manipulation of translucent glaze over a base coat to simulate the grain of more expensive hardwoods like oak or mahogany on cheaper timbers such as pine.

These boxes are typically constructed from solid pine boards joined with dovetail or rebate joints, featuring hand-forged iron hinges, strapwork, and an internal candle box compartment.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate hand-cut joinery, hand-forged hardware, genuine oxidisation and wear consistent with age, and traditional finishing methods such as scumbling or milk paint.

Position the piece at the foot of a bed or in a living space to serve as functional storage whilst introducing textural warmth, heritage character, and a surface for displaying decorative items.

Maintain the piece in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity, cleaning only with a dry or lightly damp lint-free cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can degrade historic finishes.
