Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
White chalk ground showing under the dark surface: traditional preparation for leaf.
Triangular bases with turned circular feet: standard early twentieth-century assembly.
Dark finish rubbed through on the high points: decades of handling.

This pair of 1920 candlesticks is executed in the Baroque style. The pieces are shaped from carved wood and finished with an aged dark patinated gilt coating in tones of dark brown and muted gold. Each candlestick stands on an ornate scrolled tripod base decorated with carved acanthus leaf scroll motifs. Rising from the base, the stem includes a fluted column interspersed with turned ring mouldings and foliate collars. The top of each piece terminates in a fluted urn-shaped sconce featuring vertical ribbing and a petalled rim. Visible surface wear includes subtle rubbing to the dark patinated finish, revealing highlights across the carved wooden details. Each individual stick measures 36 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 16 cm deep. These ornamental candlesticks suit display upon a mantelpiece, a sideboard, or a console table within a traditional living room, dining room, or hallway setting. They work well paired together to provide classical symmetry on a flat surface, bringing historical texture and architectural form to interior spaces. The dark gilded timber complements traditional wooden furniture schemes, while the carved tripod bases offer a stable foundation for decorative placement in domestic rooms.

Giltwood candlesticks are decorative lighting fixtures hand-carved from timber and coated with gold leaf or metallic pigments. Historically crafted for ecclesiastical altars and stately residences, these pieces feature ornate classical carving inspired by Baroque and Rococo architectural motifs.

Craftsmen sculpted the base and stem from hardwoods or softwoods before applying a gesso plaster base. Gold leaf was then applied using water or oil gilding techniques, which were subsequently burnished or patinated to enhance depth and highlight intricate relief work.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carving, such as minor asymmetry and hand-tool marks beneath the finish. Look for natural wear where the underlying bole or wood shows through the gilded surface, alongside evidence of traditional joinery at the base.

Pair these architectural objects on a polished sideboard or fireplace mantelpiece to create visual balance. Their sculptural silhouettes contrast effectively against clean modern plasterwork, minimalist cabinetry, or textured stone surfaces.

Dust giltwood gently using a soft, dry squirrel-hair brush or feather duster to avoid flaking delicate gilding. Avoid water, commercial polishes, or liquid cleaning agents, as moisture dissolves traditional gesso backings and strips historical patination.
