Description

This is a Georgian, English, engraved facet-cut stem wine or ale glass dating from the end of the 18th century, c1770, and engraved in the atelier of James Giles.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 200 years of use. It has a polished out pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ovoid-shaped bowl measuring 6 cm. (2.4 inches) in diameter at the rim. A Georgian facet-cut wine glass is a drinking vessel produced during the 18th century, characterised by geometric diamond or hexagonal cuts along the stem and bowl that catch the light.

These pieces were typically crafted from lead glass, which offered high clarity and weight, and decorated using wheel-engraving, diamond-point engraving, or facet-cutting techniques.

Authentic pieces often exhibit pontil marks on the base, minor irregularities or bubbles within the lead glass, and characteristic wear patterns consistent with age.

Antique stemware can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, used on bar carts, or integrated into table settings to add historical texture and reflective detail.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing, sudden temperature changes, and dishwashers to protect the delicate surface.
