Claret jugs became prominent during the Victorian era as formal dining reached new heights of elaboration, specifically designed for serving red wine at the dinner table.

These pieces typically combine hand-blown or mould-blown lead crystal with sterling silver or silver-plated mounts, often featuring intricate hobnail or diamond-cut patterns.

Authenticity is usually verified through makers marks or hallmarks stamped on the silver mounts, alongside the heavy weight and hand-cut precision characteristic of nineteenth-century crystal.

An antique claret jug adds refined elegance when displayed on a sideboard, bar cart, or as a dining table centrepiece, contrasting beautifully with minimalist or contemporary decor.

Clean the glass with warm soapy water and a soft brush, avoiding harsh abrasives, and polish the silver mounts gently with a specialist non-abrasive silver cloth to preserve the patina.
