Description

This is a light green, English, export, balustroid wine glass dating from the mid 18th century, c1770. These glasses were made in England for export to the Continent and reflected the continental preferences of the time.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot commensurate with 200+ years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a cup-shaped bowl measuring 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter at the slightly everted rim. The bowl sits on a hollow stem with a drop knop above an inverted baluster and basal knop. The stem leads to a domed foot which measures 6.2 cm (2.5 inches) in diameter. The glass is 14 cm (5.6 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

It is made from English lead metal. It weighs 115 g. (~ 4 oz.).

Georgian glassware, produced during the reigns of the four King Georges from 1714 to 1830, is characterised by heavy lead metal compositions, thick walls, and distinctive stem formations such as baluster, knop, and air twist designs.

These vessels were typically crafted using free-blowing techniques into moulds or manipulated by hand using traditional glassblowing tools, often incorporating high levels of lead oxide to increase brilliance and weight.

Authentic pieces are identified by pontil marks on the underside of the base, characteristic wear and tear such as fine scratching on the foot ring, subtle air bubbles trapped within the metal, and the characteristic heavy feel of lead glass.

Antique drinking vessels can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, used as single-stem flower vases on a dining table, or arranged on open shelving to add historical contrast and colour to contemporary spaces.

Antique glass should be washed strictly by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing or sudden temperature changes, and dried immediately with a lint-free cloth.
