This nineteenth-century bureau plat desk follows a Directoire style in warm brown mahogany, complemented by a dark leather writing inset and polished brass hardware. The structure holds five drawers with ornate brass keyhole escutcheons, supported by square tapered legs finished with brass sabots at the feet. The surface is framed by a simple moulding, and visible construction details include delicate brass collars above the legs. Measuring 77 cm high, 179 cm wide, and 79 cm deep, this formal desk suits a gentleman's library or a home study as a primary writing station. The freestanding design allows placement in the centre of a room, providing ample workspace for daily tasks and correspondence in a traditional interior.

FAQs

The Directoire style emerged in France during the late eighteenth century, bridging the transition between Louis XVI neoclassicism and the Empire style. It is characterized by simplified neoclassical proportions, straight lines, restrained ornamentation, and architectural symmetry.

Traditional French bureaux plat were constructed using fine hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or fruitwood, often fitted with tool-embossed leather writing surfaces. Secondary features typically included brass or bronze mounts, steel locks, and oak or pine drawer linings.

Authentic nineteenth-century desks feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, irregular underside wood planing, and genuine cast brass hardware with natural oxidisation. The presence of historic wear around keyholes and foot sabots also indicates age.

Position the bureau plat away from walls to highlight its finished rear profile and allow it to function as a room focal point. Pair it with a contemporary desk chair or mid-century table lamp to create a balanced, eclectic interior scheme.

Dust the timber surfaces with a dry microfiber cloth and apply high-grade beeswax twice yearly to protect the finish. Treat the leather writing insert with specialized leather conditioner to prevent drying or cracking, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources.
