Description

A stunning antique Victorian burr walnut pier cabinet, with a wonderful original colour & lots of character. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880 period.

The quality is excellent, this has gorgeous burr walnut grain patterns, a concave top front edge, lovely satin wood inlay and high quality gilt bronze ormolu mounts. The door has a brass grill front with a fabric backing, the interior is also fabric lined with two glass shelves.

We have given this a gentle clean and wax polish, it is in very good overall condition with just the right amount of wear and patina to be expected of a piece this age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian furniture frequently features ornate details, dark figured woods like walnut or mahogany, and classical revival motifs influenced by various historical periods.

These pieces typically utilised a softwood or hardwood carcase veneered in highly figured timbers such as burr walnut, accented with marquetry inlay, brass ormolu mounts, and glazed or brass-grille doors.

Authenticity is indicated by period-correct construction techniques, hand-cut dovetail joints in internal drawers, genuine wood veneers displaying natural ageing, and traditional hand-applied French polish finishes.

Pairing a richly figured wooden antique with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and modern textiles creates a balanced interior scheme that highlights the historical craftsmanship.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically treat the wood with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone-based polishes.
