FAQs

Toast racks emerged during the 18th century and became staple accessories on Victorian breakfast tables, designed specifically to keep toast crisp by allowing air circulation between the slices.

Traditional toast racks from this era were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or silver-plated base metals over copper or brass, frequently incorporating ceramic, porcelain, or glass bases for decorative appeal and ease of cleaning.

Authenticity is typically verified through makers marks, hallmarks or EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver) stamps on the base, alongside signs of genuine wear, patination, and traditional hand-soldered construction methods.

Such decorative pieces can be repurposed on open kitchen shelving, used as a letter or napkin holder on a desk, or integrated into a dining room tablescape to introduce historic character and metallic texture.

Silver plate should be cleaned gently using a non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the delicate plating and ruin the underlying metal.
