The Georgian period spans the reigns of the first four British monarchs named George (1714 to 1830), characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the transition from walnut to mahogany as the primary timber.

Georgian cabinet makers typically utilised solid mahogany or oak timbers, often featuring fine veneer work, hand-cut dovetail joints in drawers, and forged brass hardware such as H-hinges.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, secondary softwoods in concealed areas, genuine patina on the timber, and original cast brass hinges and escutcheons rather than modern machine-made screws.

An antique wooden cabinet provides functional wall storage while adding architectural interest and historical contrast when mounted in a minimalist dining room or neutral hallway.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and nourish the wood periodically using traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
