Victorian silver plated centrepieces gained immense popularity during the 19th century as industrial plating techniques made ornate dining accessories accessible to the middle classes. Elkington & Co pioneered commercial electroplating in the 1840s, revolutionising the production of large decorative table items.

These pieces typically combined a base metal such as nickel silver or Britannia metal with a layer of electroplated silver. They were frequently paired with hand-blown, cut, or etched glass bowls, often featuring cast figural or botanical motifs on the stand.

Authentic pieces usually bear manufacturer hallmarks and date ciphers stamped into the metal base, such as Elkington date letters. Examination of the plating thickness, wear patterns on high points, and traditional casting seams also assist in verification.

Such decorative objects work effectively as a focal point on a large dining table, sideboard, or console. They can be displayed empty to showcase the craftsmanship or filled seasonally with fruit, florals, or decorative spheres.

Silver plate requires gentle cleaning with a non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth to prevent wearing down the thin plating layer. Items should be kept away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and rubber-based materials that can accelerate tarnish.
