Antique Christofle Et Cie Silvered Bronze and Crystal Centrepiece C.1900

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A fabulous early piece of antique Christofle dating to around 1900. The hefty piece is made from silvered bronze fully marked on the side.

The cut crystal is unsigned but I am certain it is Baccarat which it usually was when paired with Christofle and Cie.

A stunning quality piece in excellent condition (one minuscule flake to the glass, insignificant but mentioned and shown for accuracy).

9 3/4" x 7 1/2" x 9 5/8" tall.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Christofle scale mark on base: French silver-plate manufacture around the turn of the century.
Number 17 punch mark: specifies the grammes of silver used in the electroplating process.
Cast Rococo-style scroll base: crisp relief chasing with natural wear in the hollows.
Hand-cut crystal bowl: wheel-cut swirling flutes and diamond facets fitting the mount exactly.
Cast hollow pedestal and central screw bolt: original multi-part metalwork construction.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This early antique Christofle et Cie centrepiece dates to the 1900 period in the Art Nouveau style. The piece comprises a clear cut crystal bowl mounted on a silvered bronze pedestal base. The clear glass bowl has a scalloped rim, horizontal grooved banding, and a band of diamond-cut crystal patterning around the body. The silvered bronze base features a fluted, turned pedestal column and an ornate trifiform foot decorated with scrolling leaf embellishments, resting on scrolling feet. The metal surface is fully marked on the side. The object measures 24.4 cm high, 24.8 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. In a modern home, this centrepiece serves as a decorative display object for a dining table centre. The combination of clear crystal and metallic silver tones allows it to integrate with various interior settings while functioning as a focal point in a dining room or living space. The construction uses heavy materials, combining a glass vessel with a substantial metal stand, designed for display on flat surfaces.

FAQs

An antique centrepiece bowl or tazza is a decorative tabletop vessel mounted on a raised foot or pedestal. Historically crafted for formal dining rooms, these vessels were designed to hold fruit, flowers, or sweetmeats while serving as a focal point for table arrangements.

Turn-of-the-century French table accessories frequently combined heavy cut crystal or blown glass bowls with cast bronze, brass, or Britannia metal bases. Silver electroplating, known as silvering, was widely applied to base metal armatures to provide the luster of sterling silver.

Authentic Christofle silvered items typically bear stamped maker marks, such as the full company name or a balance scale symbol within a rhombus or square frame. Electroplated pieces often feature numerical stamps indicating the gram weight of silver used in the plating process.

A crystal and silvered centrepiece can be placed at the centre of a dining table, on a marble sideboard, or atop a coffee table stacked with art books. Filling the basin with seasonal foliage, lemons, or leaving it empty allows the cut glass details to catch natural light.

Clean the cut crystal dish using warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive pads that could scratch the glass. For silvered bronze bases, use a soft cotton cloth and specialized, non-abrasive silver polish sparingly to prevent stripping the thin electroplated layer.
