Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French Renaissance Revival library bookcase dates from 1880 and has a breakfront profile constructed from warm brown walnut with a polished finish. The architectural design incorporates four upper glazed cabinet doors with functional locks and keys, four lower solid timber panelled doors with fielded centres, fluted pilaster columns, and original bronze fittings including ring pull handles and decorative mounts. Measuring 262 cm high, 202 cm wide, and 62 cm deep, this large furniture item fits well in a gentleman's library, a study, or a spacious traditional living room for organising books, display items, and household storage.

FAQs

A breakfront library bookcase is a large architectural piece of storage furniture featuring a central section that projects forward beyond the adjacent side bays. Originating in 18th-century Europe and widely produced throughout France, these pieces combine upper glass-fronted cabinets for book storage with lower solid wood cupboards and drawers.

High-quality French breakfront bookcases were predominantly crafted using solid walnut, oak, or mahogany for the main framework, often paired with walnut veneers on door panels. Glazed doors utilised hand-blown glass, while hardware such as escutcheons, keys, and drop handles were cast from solid brass.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, irregular hand-blown glass with subtle imperfections, and cast brass hardware showing historical oxidisation. Examination of the rear casing typically reveals hand-sawn secondary timbers and natural wood shrinkage consistent with age.

Position the bookcase as the anchor focal point along a focal wall in a home office, drawing room, or expansive hallway. The contrast of warm walnut timber against minimalist neutral walls creates visual depth, while blending curated contemporary ceramics with classic leather-bound books updates the aesthetic.

Maintain the walnut finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish twice yearly along the grain. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent wood warping, veneer lifting, and uneven fading of the finish.
