This nineteenth-century Victorian bread basket is fashioned from silver plate with a bright silver finish. The serveware piece has a circular profile with a fluted body, an arched swing handle attached with visible hinges, and an ornate scroll rim decorated with cut-out openwork detailing. The interior base and sides display delicate floral engraving, and the entire bowl rests upon a round pedestal base. The physical measurements are 10 cm high by 30 cm wide and 30 cm deep, reaching 25 cm high to the top of the handle. In a modern interior, this piece functions well on a dining table centre as a decorative bowl or display dish for breads and rolls. It suits an English Country House design scheme, adding traditional nineteenth-century metalwork to a dining room or living space. The construction includes a strong handle and a stable pedestal foot, maintaining good overall condition with only very slight signs of wear on the silver-plated surfaces.

Popularised during the 19th century, swing-handled silver-plated baskets were functional tableware items used for serving bread, cakes, or fruit during formal dining and afternoon tea.

These pieces were typically manufactured by electroplating a thin layer of pure silver onto a nickel silver or brass base metal, often finished with stamped or cast borders and hand-engraved details.

Look for maker marks such as EPNS or EPBM stamps, period-appropriate hand engraving, cast scroll rims, and natural age-related wear where the base metal shows through at high points.

Place the basket as a dining table centrepiece filled with seasonal fruit, or style it on a sideboard or console table to add reflective metal tones to the space.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and a specialised, non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh chemicals or excessive rubbing that could wear away the silver layer.
