Description

A beautiful and very impressive antique Victorian mahogany breakfront bookcase. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1880-1900 period.

It is of superb quality and has lovely proportions. It is large and impressive, yet elegant with refined features. The doors on the upper and lower sides are quite narrow, there is adjustable shelving in the top cabinet and further shelving in the lower cabinet. There is beautiful carving throughout on the borders of the panelled doors, the cornice, the arched and pierced pediment, even on the beautifully shaped bracket feet. There is fantastic astral glazing on the doors of the upper section, and it is lined with a gorgeous patterned fabric.

This has been recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with some minor wear remaining beneath the polish. The mahogany has acquired a wonderful colour tone and patina.

This comes apart in two main sections for ease of transport, and the pediment can also be removed.

A Victorian breakfront bookcase features a multi-section cabinet front where the central section projects forward from the side sections, typically constructed during the 19th century in the United Kingdom.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, featuring hand-blown crown glass panes in the upper doors and brass hardware.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, original old glass with natural imperfections, hand-turned screws, and the characteristic warm patina of aged timber.

It can be integrated into traditional or transitional rooms by pairing it with neutral wall colours, curated collections of leather-bound books, and minimalist decor to balance its heavy architectural presence.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to protect the wood finish, and occasionally applying appropriate natural beeswax furniture polish.
