FAQs

A coffor bach, translating from Welsh as little coffer, is a miniature chest traditionally made in Wales during the 17th and 18th centuries. These small boxes were often crafted as betrothal or marriage gifts, designed to hold precious items, documents, or small textiles.

Authentic pieces are predominantly constructed from solid native timber, usually local oak, utilizing traditional joinery methods such as pegged mortise and tenon frames, hand-planed panels, and hand-cut dovetails for any accompanying drawers.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber for period-appropriate tool marks, hand-forged iron or brass hardware, natural oxidisation and patina consistent with age, and structural construction typical of regional vernacular cabinet making.

This versatile piece functions effectively as a decorative storage container on a surface, bringing historical texture, warm wood tones, and traditional craftsmanship into modern living spaces, studies, or hallways.

Preservation involves maintaining stable ambient humidity and temperature away from direct heat sources and sunlight. Occasional application of microcrystalline wax helps protect the wood surface without damaging the historic finish.
