Description

This is a Georgian taper decanter dating from the turn of the 18th/19th centuries, c1800.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear consistent with some 200+ years of use.

The amethyst glass decanter is taper-shaped and plain, without decoration. The base is also plain with a rough pontil mark to its centre and measures 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter. The decanter is 24.5 cm (9.8 inches) in height without the stopper and 31 cm (12.8 inches) in height with the stopper inserted.

The stopper is of cut lozenge form, and is almost certainly the original. It is of the same colour and metal as the decanter and is an excellent fit.

There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. It appears to have been professionally cleaned. There are a couple of tiny unburst bubbles in the metal of the decanter dating from manufacture,

English lead glass decanter weighing in at 470 g. (~ 1 lb 1 oz).

A Georgian taper decanter is a narrow glass vessel historically used for serving wine or cordials during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, characterised by its slender neck and tapering body.

Antique coloured glass was typically produced by adding metallic oxides, such as manganese or cobalt, to the molten glass batch before it was hand-blown and shaped by skilled artisans.

Authentic Georgian glassware often features characteristic pontil marks on the base from hand-blown manufacturing, subtle irregularities in the glass, and specific weight and wear consistent with age.

Antique coloured glass can be displayed on a sideboard, bar cart, or open shelving where natural light can pass through the material, highlighting its rich hue and craftsmanship.

Antique glass should be washed gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives, extreme temperature changes, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
