Primitive furniture is characterised by hand-crafted construction, often utilising natural, unrefined materials like burr walnut or oak, prioritising utilitarian function and organic forms over classical ornamentation.

These items typically feature solid hardwood sections, such as burr walnut or elm, joined with traditional pegged or wedged tenon joints and supported by three splayed legs carved directly from natural branches.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks left by adzes or drawknives, natural timber shrinkage, oxidisation of the wood, and hand-cut joinery consistent with mid-century or earlier craftsmanship.

A primitive wooden bench serves as an organic focal point, contrasting effectively against clean, contemporary lines when placed in a minimalist living space or used as an understated display surface.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the historic timber surface.
