This 1870 Victorian table lamp is a brass conversion piece, retaining its period form while adapted for modern electrical use. The object combines a polished gold-coloured finish with a fluted column shaft, a rounded oil reservoir, and a square stepped base. Distinctive details include stepped mouldings on the heavy plinth, vertical fluting along the upright pillar, and a brass lampholder fitted at the apex. The lamp stands 46 cm high to the lampholder with a 20 cm diameter. It suits placement on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or study as a functional source of task or ambient lighting.

Developed during the late nineteenth century, these lamps combined Neoclassical architectural features, such as fluted columns and stepped bases, with functional oil reservoirs for domestic lighting.

High-grade cast brass, sheet brass, and occasionally silver plate were standard, often constructed with weighted stepped bases to ensure stability.

Authentic pieces generally display signs of the original burner threads or oil reservoir collar where the modern electric lamp holder fitting replaced the original oil burner assembly.

Pairing the lamp with a tailored silk or linen shade on a dark wood sideboard or side table creates strong visual contrast in both classical and modern interiors.

Wipe regularly with a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust, avoiding harsh abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners that can remove protective lacquers.
