We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Early 18th century oak coffers typically feature sturdy post-and-panel construction, hand-planed surfaces, and restrained ornamentation, reflecting utilitarian domestic storage needs of the period.

These pieces were constructed almost exclusively from solid English or Welsh oak, joined using traditional mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, often with hand-split panels.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate tool marks, timber shrinkage, hand-forged iron hinges or lockplates, and natural patination accumulated over centuries.

An antique coffer functions well as a foundational storage piece at the foot of a bed or as a living room coffee table, contrasting effectively against contemporary neutral spaces.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the timber.
