We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is an early form of silver plating created by fusing a sheet of silver to a copper core, predominantly manufactured between the mid-18th century and the mid-19th century before being superseded by electroplating.

These items were traditionally crafted from fused copper and silver plates, often featuring hand-beaten fluting, applied decorative borders, and cast handles, sometimes incorporating internal compartments for hot water to keep food warm.

Authenticity is typically determined by examining the edges and undersides for subtle copper bleed-through where the base metal shows, the weight of the fused metal, and the absence of electroplate marks, which were introduced later.

Such historic pieces can be integrated into modern settings by displaying them on a sideboard or dining table as a striking sculptural centrepiece that contrasts with minimalist or clean-lined decor.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning with non-abrasive silver polishes specifically formulated for plated items, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the thin silver layer from the underlying copper.
