Description

This is a small William IV/early Victorian, engraved Bristol green glass mell decanter dating from the early to mid 19th century, c1835/1840.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 180 years of use.

The decanter has been mouth-blown in Bristol green glass and has been engraved with thistles and roses to the body of the decanter. The decanter measures 13.5 cm (5.4 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The decanter is 16.5 cm (6.6 inches) in height without the stopper and 21 cm (8.4 inches) in height to the top of the stopper when inserted. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other evidence of restoration. There is a yellow metal and cork decanter stopper of the correct style for Brandy that comes with the decanter. We do not know as to whether it is the original or not.

A very nice looking decanter weighing in at 345 g. (~ 12 oz.).

The William IV and early Victorian era in British glassmaking spanned the early to mid-19th century, characterised by deep-toned colours like Bristol green and amber, combined with robust, functional forms and often intricate wheel-engraved botanical or geometric motifs.

These pieces were typically crafted from heavy, free-blown or mould-blown lead glass, infused with metallic oxides to achieve rich colourations. Stoppers were often custom-ground to fit individual necks, sometimes featuring metal or brass rings and mounts.

Authentic pieces display distinct pontil marks on the base where they were snapped from the blowing iron, coupled with fine hand-engraving, slight asymmetries or tiny air bubbles inherent to period manufacturing techniques, and natural wear to the base.

An antique green glass decanter serves as a sophisticated focal point when displayed on a sideboard, bar cart, or open shelving, catching natural light to highlight its rich colour and historical texture.

Antique glass should be washed strictly by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock. Internal staining can be safely cleared using non-abrasive cleaning beads without harsh chemical detergents.
