This late nineteenth-century Chinese table lamp originates from the Qing Dynasty and takes the form of a hand-carved rootwood figure of a bearded man in flowing robes. The wood exhibits a warm brown colour with a patinated finish, standing on a natural root base and fitted with a brass bulb socket at the top. Details visible upon close inspection include deeply carved facial features with visible teeth, intricately folded garments, detailed bare feet resting on the rock-like base, and an aged screw-type electrical fitting. The piece measures 48 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. Position this carved lamp on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or a study to provide both functional lighting and a decorative accent. It works well as a sculptural piece on a cabinet or side table, blending traditional craftsmanship with practical illumination for everyday use in the home.

Root carving is a traditional Chinese folk art that utilizes the natural shapes of tree roots, gnarled branches, and stumps to create expressive sculptures. Reaching widespread popularity during the Ming and Qing dynasties, artisans carefully carved figures, animals, and scholar objects while preserving the natural contours of the wood.

Craftsmen primarily utilised dense native hardwoods such as boxwood, camphor, pear wood, and various native tree roots. These dense timbers allowed for fine detail in facial expressions and drapery folds, while holding up well to detailed hand carving and polished wax finishes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-tool marks, smooth wear on raised edges from historic handling, and natural oxidisation within deeper carved recesses. Additionally, original carvings fitted as lamps often show evidence of mid-twentieth-century electrical conversions, such as drilled wiring channels through older timber bases.

A carved root wood lamp serves as an organic sculptural focal point when placed on a contemporary sideboard, marble console, or dark wood desk. Pair the base with a simple linen or silk shade in warm cream tones to balance the detailed craftsmanship and natural dark wood patina.

Dust the detailed carvings regularly using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush. Avoid water, harsh chemical detergents, and placement near direct heat sources or prolonged sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and cracking; apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once a year to preserve the lustre.
