This Edwardian sterling silver pin cushion takes the form of a swan, complete with an arching neck, chased feather texture across the body, and a dark blue velvet cushion insert. Modelled in the English Country House style and hallmarked for Birmingham 1909 with the silversmith mark for Adie & Lovekin, the piece combines silver and dark blue tones with detailed metalwork. It measures 5 cm high, 7 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this small decorative accessory provides a charming accent for a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or dressing table while remaining a functional item for storing sewing pins.

Silver novelty pin cushions gained widespread popularity in the early twentieth century during the Edwardian era. Silversmiths produced small decorative figures, primarily in animal shapes, combining utilitarian sewing accessories with desktop ornaments.

These objects were predominantly constructed from sterling silver, shaped via casting or stamping to produce detailed metal casings. The interior cavity was typically filled with cotton or horsehair and topped with a dark velvet or silk fabric insert.

Authentic British silver items bear official hallmarks including the lion passant silver purity mark, an assay office city stamp, a date letter, and a silversmith makers mark. On novelty pin cushions, these stamps are generally located near the lower rim or base of the silver frame.

Small silver novelties can be displayed on a tray, vanity unit, or bookshelf to add metallic texture to a room. Grouping several small silver items together creates a focused curated vignette on a side table or mantelpiece.

The silver body should be wiped gently using a clean silver polishing cloth, taking care not to let liquid polish touch the original fabric cushion. Regular light dusting with a soft dry brush will keep the fabric insert clear of surface debris.
