This George III English provincial silver bread or cake basket dates to 1814 and originates from Newcastle, bearing a full set of Newcastle hallmarks alongside an original owner's crest. Created from sterling silver, the piece has a polished metallic finish and a bright silver colour scheme. The circular vessel displays an overhead swing handle, a cast shell-detailed rim, elaborate floral engraving across the wide border, and a fluted pedestal base resting on a circular foot. The handle maintains an upright position independently, while the bowl sits flat on a table surface. Measuring 22 cm high and 27 cm wide, this collectors piece suits placement on a dining room sideboard top or a living room console table for serving bread or cake during formal meals or gatherings. The sterling silver construction provides a durable surface that reflects light from overhead fixtures, while the detailed engraving and fluting offer textural contrast against the smooth interior basin.

A Georgian silver bread or cake basket is a decorative tabletop container produced during the reign of Kings George I through IV, featuring an overhead swing handle and hand-chased or engraved ornamentation.

These vessels were hand-raised from solid sterling silver, incorporating fluted bodies, hand-engraved floral motifs, cast rims, and a hinged overhead handle.

Authentic pieces carry British hallmarks stamped by the Newcastle Assay Office, including the town mark of three castles, a makers mark, the lion passant, a monarch head duty mark, and the date letter corresponding to 1814.

Position the vessel on a dining table or sideboard top as a focal point, displayed empty to highlight the interior engraving or used to hold fruit.

Clean gently with a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive materials, and store in a low-humidity environment to minimise oxidisation.
