Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This large German silver-plated tray dates from the mid 19th Century and bears the maker marks of I.H.Peters & Co of Hamburg. The oval basin incorporates twin side handles, a beaded rim, and four cast scroll feet. The reflective silver surface is decorated with engraved Greek Key patterns and prick-dot borders, alongside foliate detailing on the handles and feet. The plate remains in excellent condition with clear maker marks and no structural faults or repairs.

FAQs

During the 19th century, electroplating techniques enabled craftspeople to produce ornate table service items, such as large serving waiters and salvers, expanding access to luxurious entertaining accessories beyond solid sterling silver.

These pieces typically consist of a base metal core, such as nickel silver, brass, or copper, electroplated with a fine layer of silver, complete with cast handles and decorative feet attached to the rim.

Authentic items from this period often feature stamped maker marks, city hallmarks such as Hamburg, or numerical quality codes indicating silver layer thickness stamped on the underside.

A silver-plated tray functions as an organizing base on a sideboard, coffee table, or bar cart to group crystal decanters, glassware, or decorative objects.

Clean gently using a specialized non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding aggressive rubbing that might wear down the silver plating over time.
