This “English Antique Silver Plated Hamilton Torpedo Bottle Holder 1880 William Hutton” found a buyer.

It was listed by The Silver Squirrel. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A lovely antique silver plated bottle holder. It has been marked with the makers mark of William Hutton & Son. I would date it to c1880-1900. It was made to hold the round bottom Hamilton bottles on the dining table. It is in super condition being free from dings splits and repairs, no wear. It measures approx. 4.25 inches (11cm) tall by 3.25 inches (8.5cm) across the top and the same across the bottom, it weighs 116 grams. A very nice quality example.

Declaration

The Silver Squirrel has dated this Silver Plated Bottle Holder to the Victorian era.

A Victorian silver-plated bottle holder is a specialised dining accessory designed during the 19th century to securely hold specific glass bottles, such as rounded torpedo-shaped soda water bottles, preventing them from rolling on the table.

These items were typically constructed from a base metal, such as nickel silver or Britannia metal, which was then electroplated with a layer of silver using the process invented in the 1840s.

Authentic pieces can often be identified through makers marks, hallmarks, or manufacturer stamps-such as those from prominent silversmiths like William Hutton-as well as the weight, patina, and quality of the silver plating.

Antique silver tableware can be integrated into contemporary dining or living spaces by using them as functional display pieces, barware accents, or minimalist sculptural elements on sideboards and bar carts.

Silver-plated items should be cleaned gently using non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth only when necessary, and stored in a dry environment to prevent tarnishing and damage to the underlying metal.
