These Victorian wall sconces comprise a pair of cast brass three-arm light fittings in the French Rococo style, each displaying rich gold tones. The foliate back sections issue three curvaceous, sinuous arms decorated with acanthus leaf scrollwork and rocaille curves, terminating in pierced flower petals engraved on top. White candle-sleeve light fittings sit atop each branch, holding the lamps against a pale neutral background. Visible elements include intricate metal casting, ornate leaf and scroll motifs, and electrical wiring extending from the back sections. Measuring 44 cm high and 34 cm wide, these wall-mounted light fixtures suit a narrow wall space in a hallway, drawing room, dining room, or bedroom. They bring classic French chateau character and period illumination to domestic interiors today.

FAQs

A Rococo wall sconce, or applique, is a decorative wall-mounted light fixture originating in 18th-century France, characterised by asymmetric curves, acanthus leaves, and naturalistic scrollwork.

Historically, these fixtures were cast in bronze or brass, chased by hand, and finished with gilt lacquers or fire-gilding to enhance light reflectivity across room surfaces.

Authentic period sconces feature heavy cast metal construction, hand-chased decorative details, asymmetric scrolling motifs, and evidence of subtle oxidisation or patina near joinery.

Mounted alongside mirrors, artwork, or flanking a mantelpiece, brass sconces provide warm accent lighting and act as decorative architectural elements in formal and contemporary spaces.

Dust the intricate metalwork regularly using a dry brush, and avoid harsh solvent cleaners that can strip original lacquers or surface patination.
