FAQs

Victorian inkstands became essential desk accessories during the 19th century, reflecting the eras emphasis on correspondence, literacy, and status. Elaborate designs often incorporated trays, candle holders, and multiple inkwells crafted by prominent silversmiths.

Traditional inkstands were commonly manufactured using base metals coated in silver via electroplating, paired with cut or pressed glass ink bottles featuring metal lids. Premium examples utilised solid sterling silver, brass, or bronze combined with ceramics or exotic hardwoods.

Authenticity is typically determined by examining makers marks, hallmarks, or electroplate stamps stamped onto the base or rim. Additionally, genuine period items exhibit natural wear patterns, heavier construction, and traditional manufacturing techniques such as cast mounts.

An antique inkstand can function as a sophisticated centrepiece on an office desk, console table, or mantelpiece, contrasting sharply with contemporary minimalism. It provides both textural interest and a focal point when paired with modern stationery or minimalist decor.

Silver plate requires gentle cleaning with a specialised, non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to remove tarnish without damaging the underlying plating. Items should be kept away from direct moisture, humidity, and direct sunlight to preserve the metallic finish.
