Opalescent glass, often associated with late 19th and early 20th-century Murano and Venetian makers such as Salviati, features a milky, translucent quality with shimmering fire-like highlights that shift between blue and amber tones.

These pieces are hand-blown using specialized glass formulas containing bone ash or other agents to create the characteristic opalescence, often combined with applied coloured glass rims and hand-tooled stoppers.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit pontil marks on the base, slight asymmetries inherent to free-blowing, delicate ribbing, and characteristic wear consistent with age on the underside and stopper seating.

They can be displayed on mirrored vanity trays, open dressing room shelving, or styled alongside modern ceramics to create a contrast between contemporary minimalism and historical craftsmanship.

Clean gently with lukewarm water and mild soap using a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasive brushes, or submerging vintage stoppers that may have delicate internal fittings.
